The PSA and the National Insurance Board (NIB) signed an agreement for a 9% wage increase for workers for the period 2014-2016. This agreement was registered at the Industrial Court but to date the workers have not received their increases as stipulated in the agreement. The Minister of Finance has instructed that NIB not pay the increases. Mr. Michal Annisette, General Secretary of the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC), said that the Industrial Court was an independent body whose decisions were binding on the Government. Annisette said the wage-hike was a negotiated settlement, was registered at the court and must be honoured under the law. “The NIB does not depend on the Government to pay their wages/back pay but has sufficient cash flow to do that,” he added. The PSA calls on NIB to abide by the law and the signed agreement and pay to workers their increases and backpay arrears.
