The PSA believes that health and safety in the workplace is an issue for everyone. Every year, scores of workers in Trinidad and Tobago suffer accidents and ill health at work – most of which can be avoided.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act Chapter 88:08, an employer must ensure the safety, health and welfare of all employees at work.
Where there are twenty-five or more employees, a health and safety committee should be established comprising persons representing the employer and an equal number of persons representing the workers.
As an employee, you have the right to refuse unsafe work if you are exposed to imminent danger, and equipment you are required to use may endanger you or another person, or the physical condition of the workplace is likely to be injurious to your health and endanger you.
If you are concerned that your employer is placing you in harm you should contact your union representatives or call PSA at 226-5059.
